Peter Bassett is a writer, speaker and broadcaster on Opera -
particularly the works of Richard Wagner.
He was Artistic Administrator and Dramaturg for the 2004 State Opera of South Australia's production of Der Ring des Nibelungen and was a consultant for West Australian Opera's 2006 Tristan und Isolde.
Between 2001 and 2008 Peter led opera tours for Opera Australia and Renaissance Tours to South Australia, Germany, Finland, Latvia, Estonia, Russia, Brazil, Argentina, Chile, China, Denmark, Canada, Western Australia, France, Switzerland, Italy, Austria and the Czech Republic - in some cases more than once. In 2009 he will lead the following tours: 22 May - 4 June, Spain: Fidelio at Gran Teatre del Liceu Barcelona; Tristan und Isolde at Teatro de la Maestranza Seville, and Götterdämmerung at the Palau de les Arts Valencia, with concerts in Barcelona and visits to Granada and Cordoba. 4 - 12 June, Vienna for Der Ring des Nibelungen, with a concert by Maurizio Pollini and a visit to Eisenstadt. 8-15 November, Washington DC for Der Ring des Nibelungen, with visits to Philadelphia and Monticello. He has managed and chaired conferences on Wagner's works, and devised Opera Now, a seminar on contemporary opera during the 2000 Adelaide Festival of Arts. He has given numerous lectures and pre-performance talks on a wide variety of operas, in Australia and abroad.
Peter has published several books on opera, and has compiled and edited numerous programme books. He has contributed essays to international journals and production publications, and examples of these are attached.
